Composite Restorations

Composite restorations are tooth colored fillings that are chemically (and sometimes mechanically) bonded to the tooth. Composite restorations are more aesthetic than previously-used amalgam fillings and with updated materials, have excellent longevity.

This procedure would typically involve the removal of current tooth decay, placement of an acid etchant to dry out the tooth in preparation for bonding, the placement of an adhesive which is light cured, and then the composite. The composite is then shaped and polished for a comfortable and aesthetic finish.

The tooth is dried out during the procedure, so in some cases you may have post operative sensitivity. This is because when the tooth is dried out, the tubules that extend from the outside of the tooth to the pulp of the tooth become agitated. Although this sensitivity can last for up to 2 weeks, it is temporary and will subside eventually.
